Today begins the first day of my real job. For the last few weeks I have been training and on probation but Ms. Scott called me into the office on Friday and said that I was doing so well I could start my position at full pay on Monday.
We only get paid by the month and it will be two more weeks before I get my first check. It’s been really tough. I have to have money for the bus every day; it is simply too far to walk. I’ve been eating plenty of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I don’t mind cause we’ve grown up on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches but sometimes I feel a little embarrassed in the lunch room. Some of the other girls were laughing at me because I eat the same thing every day. They order salads from the deli and coffee from the shop on the ground floor of our building but I think they are wasteful.
Even if I have the money to do that one day, I am not going to buy my lunch every day. Maybe on special occasions or a Friday sometimes, as a treat but I plan on using my money for much better things than expensive restaurant salads and coffee shop coffee.
This post is in response the writing challenge As I Sat on the Bus.
