Velvet Verbosity: Brethren

There is this enormous weight
bearing down on me.

It didn’t start out like that.
It started small but very very dark.

I fought it like I always do.
But it feeds on these short gray days.

It seemed to be gathering strength
but then so did I.

I thought I had it beat.
And just when I began to relax,
to look for the sunshine,
to find my joy,
it pulled the rug out.

It found a new ally.
Not my sisters or my brethren,
not a man, nor my job,
not even money.

Something much stronger;
a son.
