Friday Fictioneers: The Witness

Welcome to Friday Fictioneers where each week close to 100 people participate in a flash fiction challenge based on a photo prompt.

And now my 100 word story:

Being unemployed for a year now had worn on him. It would have been nice if his wife had been more supportive but all she did was get drunk and rage; four, five times a week. She reminded him of every mistake he had ever made, every weakness he had ever shown.

His hatred quietly simmered as he sipped his scotch.

When she called him “less than a man” for the umpteenth time he snapped. Choking the life out of her had been pleasurable. He felt no remorse until he looked and saw the witness watching from the neighbor’s tree.

  1. Dear Dawn,

I feel guilty that I rather enjoyed the image of the fed up husband choking the life out of the shrew. I’m sure the dog won’t talk but could certainly lead the police to the body. Nice one.

  2. To be fair, who would think to check the tree for dogs before going into a blind rage? As long as the dog doesn’t see where he buries the body I don’t think he has much to worry about… not from the dog anyway.

  3. Jimmy Stewart figured out the murder in “Rear Window,” but my guess is that this dog isn’t as smart (but then, it can climb a tree!). A sad, bleak story — but well written to capture this married couple’s life.
