Trees are our Most Important Natural Resource We use their wood in so many ways.
In 1934 President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated a weather-belt project to combat the dust bowl in the Great Plains. The Prairie States Forestry Project planted 220 million trees by 1942 on the perimeters of farms.
These trees reduced the wind velocity and lessened evaporation of moisture from the soil. To this day this project stands as one of the greatest successes of government intervention to an environmental problem.
