In March of 2012 we stayed in a beautiful upscale Washington DC hotel across the street from a homeless shelter. It was a warm March and the cherry blossoms were out early.
What was curious about this shelter is the amount of people who stayed outside of it; sleeping in alcoves and stairwells. I don’t know the reason, I imagine it had to do with rules. Perhaps they weren’t allowed to bring all of their belongings inside. They seemed safe enough during the day as we walked around the building (a church) and observed different stations where there were no people, just the objects they owned.
