This post is in response to the 100 word writing challenge from Velvet Verbosity where we are asked to write 100 words inspired by a single prompt. This week’s word is Smooth.
I look into the mirror and use my fingers to push back the excess skin. I remember a time when my face was smooth, free from the wrinkles and lines that have become part of my new look.
My new look (sigh); consists of silver highlights, flat shoes, and respectable necklines. I donated all my miniskirts, high heels, (and those plunging necklines).
I step cautiously, careful not to trip or fall. I feel as though I have lost my courage. My older friends say I have gained sensibility. I imagine one day I will say this to my younger friends.
.
Great response to the prompt, a really unique interpretation! I remember seeing a woman standing on a train platform when I was in my teens, she must have been about 80, and she was wearing six inch heels. I always vowed I would do the same. We shall see. 😉

Thanks. I fell a few years ago while wearing platform shoes. In addition i was engaged to a man shorter than me. That’s when I gave up my heels. I’ve never regretted it.

Oh no! Weirdly the one time I fell when running up escalators in the underground stations here in London I was wearing flat sandals! I’m 5’3, so not quite ready to give them up just yet, I’m seriously considering it though 😉 If you fancy another flash fiction prompt, I’ve just launched a new event that starts with its first challenge next Wednesday, would be great to see your take on it!

Ha, no worries, I know what it can get like! It’ll be running weekly so there’s no rush to take part, just if you ever get the time or need the inspiration! It’s http://ismithwords.com/2015/05/27/roar/ Thanks 🙂

Ah yes you might have trouble finding any of mine, I haven’t done one in a while, and not since I changed the content of my blog, so they’ve mostly been banished to my hard drive. I do still love reading everyone else’s though, which is how I found you!

Oh dear, silver highlights, flat shoes…and stepping carefully… I can (sadly) identify with this all too well. 😧

Hi… I really, really liked this. I think it captures perfectly what happens as we age. It’s a great piece and very well written. Thank you! 🙂

Some serious reflections here, Dawn. (Honestly, no pun intended.) I like to say that I’ve paid my dues and have now reached the age when I DESERVE to wear only what’s comfortable.
That picture is amazing. What a creative and talented photographer you are.
