I live in a rural town, in Virginia. For the most part, the sidewalks roll up by 6 pm, in the winter, earlier. It’s pretty quiet around here.
But quiet, like anything, is relative. For some folks sitting by a stream may seem quiet but the water running over the rocks. the wildlife and even a gentle breeze all make noise.
Libraries are well-known for being quiet but hushed whispers often bounce off the acoustic ceilings in echoes.
Some folks like the quiet of a cemetery. They feel alone with their loved one’s spirit but these days many cemeteries are close to busy roads and the sounds of traffic often interrupt.
I’m sitting here alone on a quiet evening in my home. But the motors of the house all make noise. The furnace, the air purifier, the ice maker, even my PC, softly hum.
If you really want quiet you will have to go to an anechoic chamber. It just so happens I know where one is. I’ve never been but you can find it here.
