Friday Fictioneers: Turn that Frown Upside Down

Monique, feeling dejected took a final picture with her phone. She was proud of her work. It had taken her months to complete this piece. She had created a living sculpture where each piece moved with another when turned by hand. She thought children and men would love it. They probably did but there was only one man on the panel of judges and no children. Honorable Mention felt so dishonorable in this crowd of art made from scraps like hers.

Angrily she tore off the price tag and almost didn’t see the large print on the back “Sold”.

  1. I remember gumbling about getting an honorable mention in a writing contest. Then getting chastised by an older writer who has over 130 novels published. He reminded me about the other 90% of the entries who didn’t even get an honorable mention. I’ve never forgotten than lesson.
