“I love spending my husband’s money” laughed Irene siting across from me at lunch.
“You’re terrible” I scolded.
“I’ve earned it.”
“Don’t you worry he’ll cut you off?”
“As a matter of fact I think we might be headed that way”
“Oh?”
“I think he might be serious about his latest girlfriend”
“How can you tell?”
“Just a feeling”
The waiter returned with Irene’s credit card just then.
“I’m sorry ma’am, this has been declined.”
She reached into her wallet and pulled out another.
“Try this one”.
She looked at me and smiled, “this is going to cost him”.

This could get messy, but I bet Irene knows what she is doing.

Neither of the pair are up to hero-level. I hope they both perish in an interminable legal death struggle

I guess they’re both grown-ups who know the rules of the game…
You tell the story nicely, Dawn. I like the way the marriage is described indirectly in conversation with a third party.

I suppose it’s partly because of my work, but I always wonder how what started as such a happy, passionate relationship could deteriorate to such anger and vengefulness. Sad.

I used to wonder that too…before my first divorce.

So sad. From your wording, I’m assuming there was a second divorce? Lots of pain involved there.

Oh, the games people play to make the one they used to love “pay” for their indiscretions instead of learning how to walk away. Plenty of hurt bubbling just under the surface in your writing. Nicely portrayed.

What is marrying for love when position, money, and power gets in the way? It’s a commodity way too often

I like how you chose to have the ladies dining out – I saw the stores and considered shopping for my entry (but used the stairs instead).
anyhow, you grabbed a certain shallowness here that was quite realistic in some social circles.

He’s going to pay… and pay… It sounds like there’s no love lost so she’s nothing to lose.

Dear Dawn,
I guess Irene is making her point. Kind of made me chuckle. From where I sit, he’s got it coming.

Irene has a birds eye view of her husband’s finance sitting from top of the tower. She does not like the man and probably feeling is mutual.

I have a feeling that Irene might have done the same as that new girlfriend of his… no better way to know about men.

Exactly! I tried to get that through but with 100 words…well you know…

She should take her friend on a trip, not just lunch, before the credit card is up. Paris? Rome? Love the conversation style of your story.

At first I thought how selfish of her, spending his money like that. But – his latest girlfriend idea popped up – maybe he was just asking for it. I wonder if the girlfriend is doing the same with his cash.
