When you’re on holiday, do you prefer self catering or a hotel/B&B?
I do not really have the money to travel any more, not that I ever really did but at least I was able to go some. Anyway, when I did, I liked to cook a big container of goulash. I love that stuff and could eat it for every meal and sometimes I did. When I would take my grandson(s) I would always be sure to bring a loaf of bread, peanut butter, and jelly. You can not go wrong with that! When I traveled with my ex we would often bring deli meats for sandwiches to eat for our lunches. Eating out is one of the biggest expenses to traveling so cutting as much of that as you can is the only way to go.

Do you have a favourite meal you cook for yourself or order when out?
It depends on where I am, for instance, whenever I go to Cracker Barrel I always order the Meatloaf. I don’t love meatloaf but I like it. I don’t make it at home and Cracker Barrel has good meatloaf so I order it there. At another favorite restaurant, which is temporarily closed for remodeling I usually get their fish tacos. I’ve made these at home but they are not as good.
A favorite of mine, which I am actually prepared this week, is yellow squash, sauteed with tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers, and olive oil, then mixed with shrimp scampi and served over thin spaghetti noodles. Yum!

In the current fuel crisis, have you made a conscious effort not to use the car unless absolutely necessary?
Yes, at times.

If you were to compare yourself to a plant, what would you be?
A succulent.

Please share some happy memories from your childhood.
On a recent outing my friend and I drove past a sign that said “Picnic Area Ahead”. It is rare to see a sign like that these days but when we were kids it was a thing to go for a car ride and stop on the side of the road for an early dinner. Mom would fry chicken the day before so we would eat it cold with macaroni salad and butter bread with (and this is an important part) grape jelly.

What brought gratitude, a smile or laughter to your life this week?
I ended my week by attending a dear friend’s surprise birthday party. The surprising part for me was that she was actually surprised. I honestly did not think they could pull it off. We may not hang out like we used to but I know her well enough to know by this look on her face she was surprised.

  1. “Picnic area ahead” brings back memories for me too! When we were kids our summer holidays involved a very long car journey, and we always looked out for that sign so we could pull over and have a break and something to eat 🙂
